Here are 10 fun facts about our 16th president that may surprise you.

#1. HOW TALL WAS LINCOLN? (HINT: VERY)

Abe Lincoln was 6 feet 4 inches tall, which in the 1800s basically made him a walking skyscraper. He also had size 14 feet, which is just unfair. Despite being thin, he was crazy strong, wrestled over 300 matches, and only lost once. He was basically the Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson of the 19th century.

#2. A CABIN, A BABY, AND A FUTURE PRESIDENT

Abraham Lincoln was born on February 12, 1809, in a tiny log cabin in Kentucky. There were no smartphones, no electricity, and definitely no presidential suites. Just a hardworking family, lots of reading, and plenty of chores. Little did anyone know that this cabin-born kid would grow up to change America forever.

#3. ABE’S FIRST JOB: DEFINITELY NOT PRESIDENT

Before he was a lawyer or a politician, Abe did a little bit of everything—chopping wood, working at a store, and even being a postmaster. No fancy desk job here, just good old-fashioned sweat and elbow grease. Clearly, young Lincoln was not afraid of hard work—or getting splinters.

#4. “HONEST ABE” NICKNAME!

A customer once overpaid at his store, and instead of keeping the money, Abe walked miles to return it. This level of honesty earned him the nickname “Honest Abe”—which is ironic because he probably wouldn’t approve of smuggling snacks into a movie theater under a giant hat.

#5. DID LINCOLN HAVE KIDS?

Yep! Abe and Mary had four sons—Robert, Edward, William (Willie), and Thomas (Tad). Unfortunately, only Robert lived to adulthood. Life was tough back then, and losing kids to illness was sadly common. But Lincoln loved his boys deeply, and Tad especially was known for being a little troublemaker.

#6. LINCOLN ATTENDED SEANCES

After the death of their 11-year-old son, the president and First Lady Mary Lincoln found comfort in spiritualism. Hoping to contact her son, Mary hosted at least eight seances in the Red Room of the White House. Lincoln supposedly joined two of these gatherings.

#7. LITTLE GIRL’S ADVICE

In 1860, Abe decided to run for president, and a little girl named Grace Bedell wrote him a letter saying, “Hey, you should grow a beard, it’ll help you win votes.” Lincoln took her advice, grew his now-iconic beard, and—surprise!—he won the election. Who knew facial hair could be so powerful?

#8. THE ORIGINAL POCKET ORGANIZER!

While a practicing attorney, Lincoln spent a good deal of time preparing for his cases, and he kept research notes inside the lining of his hats.

#9. GETTYSBURG ADDRESS: SHORT, SWEET, AND LEGENDARY

Later that year, after a huge battle at Gettysburg, Lincoln gave one of the most famous speeches ever. At just 272 words, it was short but incredibly powerful, reminding Americans that the war was about freedom, equality, and democracy. Basically, he dropped the ultimate mic in just two minutes.

#10. A PLAY WITH A TRAGIC ENDING

On April 14, 1865, Lincoln went to see a play at Ford’s Theatre. Bad idea. John Wilkes Booth, an actor and pro-slavery supporter, snuck into the balcony and shot Lincoln. Abe never regained consciousness and died the next morning.
